The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous is a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vaccarèse and Cinsault. Beautiful, full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe black raspberries, violets, ground pepper, lavender, and herbes de Provence all emerge from this gorgeous barrel sample, and it shows the pure, fresh, yet still concentrated style of the vintage brilliantly.

The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is an assemblage of 60% Grenache (planted in 1905 on sandy soils and typically raised in concrete), 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarese (these are normally matured in oak). In 2020, this comes across as slightly smoky on the nose, with plenty of black raspberry fruit but not as much nuance as this cuvée often exhibits. It's full-bodied and softly tannic, with a mouthfeel that's deceptively airy and a long, lingering finish, so perhaps the bouquet was just going through an awkward phase.

A special 3,200-bottle release culled from a selection of Sangiovese from their Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole plots, the La Fiorita 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Fiore di No is a very convincing wine that offers much more depth and complexity than the estate's classic Brunello. The wine opens to dark fruit, spice and camphor ash and then shows a very complete, wide-brush-stroke approach to the grape. You get the dark primary fruit, the depth and the length on the mouthfeel.

The cherry, black-olive and dried-strawberry aromas are so attractive. Hints of cinnamon and licorice. Full-bodied, round and rich with lots of fruit and velvety tannins. Extremely flavorful and rich. Drink after 2022.

The finish is long and dense, and features polished tannins and a suave texture. Knockout Brunello, probably the best I have had from La Fiorita in a very long time, and likely ever. Noticeably less floral than the 2015 classico Brunello from this estate but more complex and much deeper. Made with grapes taken from the best part of the Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole vineyards. The NO on the label stands for Natalie Oliveros, the estate owner; a real knockout, this wine is only made in the best vintages.

The 2021 Magnolia 1896 Shiraz is from the Magnolia Road vineyard in Vine Vale, at the foot of Mengler's Hill (granitic rock base). Like the Magnolia 1965 tasted prior, this wine is made from fruit grown on vines planted in the Vine Vale sands, however here, we have much older vines (planted 1896) and in shallower sandy soils, over a bed of mica-laden clay. This tiny 0.45-hectare section of the vineyard is slightly lower in elevation than the 1965 parcel, at 315 meters. The fruit is handpicked according to the lunar calendar. On the nose, this wine is concentrated and expressive of raspberry compote, crushed rocks, ginger root, dusted licorice and sweet roasted meat. In the mouth, the fruit rises on a shore of pluming tannin. The experience here is 360 degrees—a total, kaleidoscopic look at the fruit character within the tannic framework. Like being underwater, all other sounds and sights cease to exist or matter when you are peering into the depths of this complex wine. This is an exciting, modern, earth-driven take on Barossa. It feels good, really good. This has as much tannin as fruit, as much flavor as texture, as much magic as earth. 14.8% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax.

A Central Russian River Blend, the 2022 Chardonnay Chloe is a bright yellow hue and captures a wide spectrum of citrus with notes of orange, Meyer lemon, fresh pineapple, toasted spice, and a hint of almond through the mid-palate as well as a nice lift of citrus on the finish. It’s a beautiful wine offering a richer tone through the range.

Lemongrass, sage and apples with some pastry dough and flint. Medium-bodied with a pretty core of fruit and hints of minerals, flint and spices such as peppercorns and cloves.

The 2022 Chardonnay Chloe comes from three vineyards: Flora Marie (30%), El Diablo (30%) and Dumol's Bressay Estate Vineyard (40%). Grapes were harvested August 12, 18 and 26. It has heady, enveloping scents of peach, quince, lemongrass and jasmine, plus touches of toast and spice. The palate is silky and mouthwatering and features layer after layer of perfumed fruit that lingers in the mouth long after the wine has gone.
