Als Pierluigi Tolaini Ende der 1990er-Jahre in den gerade frisch erworbenen Rebflächen große Teile der Sangiovese-Stöcke herausriss und dafür Bordelaiser Rebsorten wie Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc und Merlot pflanzte, staunten seine Nachbarn nicht schlecht. Der Quereinsteiger hat doch nicht etwa vor, hier - mitten im Chianti Classico - Supertuscans zu machen? Doch. Hatte er! Während um ihn herum alle Winzer, die diesem legendären Weinstil frönten, ins Bolgheri abwanderten und sich dort eine Preisschlacht um Lagen und Weine lieferte, hatte Tolaini eine Vision. Nämlich die exzellenten Lagen des Chianti Classico zu nutzen, um hier außergewöhnliche Weine im Bordeaux-Stil entstehen zu lassen, für die man eben kein Vermögen im mittleren dreistelligen Bereich hinblättern musste. Er wollte Supertuscans in ihrer ursprünglichen Form, ganz fernab des Hypes machen. Und auch, wenn Pierluigi Tolaini inzwischen ein weltweit bekannter Winzer ist, hat sich an seiner Einstellung nichts geändert. Das Herzstück seiner Supertuscan-Range bildet der 'Valdisanti', der auch in der 2018er-Edition begeistert - 92 Punkte von Antonio Galloni sowie 94 Suckling-Punkte zeugen davon.

Petrignano is a new wine for Dievole, the result of the estate’s collaboration with Chilean soil specialist, Pedro Parra. It comes from a recently planted 15ha site between 300 and 330 metres above sea level, distinguished by an abundance of limestone near the surface. The nose is flinty and iron-speckled, giving way to sun-soaked wild berries. It balances the generous warmth of the south with freshness and long, chalky tannins, sneaking some vibrant acidity in there too.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Petrignano returns all the goodness of a very intriguing vintage in the Black Rooster area. The aromatic contribution is fragrant and intense, with the lush, continuous red fruit anticipating a juicy, well-modulated taste development with an energetic finish and not without contrasts in its spicy returns. For us, it is the Red of the Year.

Schon seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ein Synonym für Qualität, gehört dieses Musterweingut heute zu den besten, zuverlässigsten und – gemessen an der Qualität – preiswertesten Adressen in ganz Bella Italia.

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a saturated and shiny dark ruby color. This edition is loaded with black and purple fruits, such as blackberry preserves and plum. Those more robust tones are followed by spice, tar and campfire ash. The tannins are young (but not stemmy or bitter), and you'd be best served by letting this wine age and relax with more cellar aging. Il Poggione always makes some of the smoothest and most texturally enriched wines in the appellation, and this vintage is no exception.

Masses of ashen earth, smoke, dusty cherry and roses with nuances of clove lift up from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. This is silky and pliant upon entry, presenting a rich display of intense red and hints of black fruits laced with chalky minerals that drenches the palate. Penetrating acidity and grippy tannins create a burst of cheek-puckering tension, clenching down hard with youthful poise, as notes of licorice and hard red candies linger through the structured, medium-length finale. There are some moments where the 2017 reminds you that it comes from an incredibly hot and dry vintage, yet overall, it's a huge success for the year. That said, it needs time to unwind from its youthful state. Production was down 15-20% at Il Poggione in 2017 due to severe selection of bunches, and all of the fruit that would have been reserved for the Riserva Vigna Paganelli was added to the Brunello instead.

Sweet, ripe cherry, blackberry and plum fruit flavors are framed by mineral, tobacco and thyme accents in this vibrant, balanced red. Make no mistake, there are ample tannins too, yet this still finds a nice equilibrium on the lingering finish.
