The Castello Romitorio 2017 Brunello di Montalcino comes from an estate that is quickly becoming a leader in a special niche of the Montalcino market. The wine is modern and soft, showing lots of contained ripeness and creaminess, yet it successfully embraces the fundamentals of the appellation and Sangiovese, thanks to its bright acidity and finely tuned structure. Few wines reach this level of precision, especially in a challenging vintage such as this.

James Suckling

A creamy and dusty red with plum and cherry character, together with some bark and chocolate-powder flavors. It’s full and fresh with layers of tannins that hold it together. Give it time to soften.

To the northwest of Montalcino, Castello Romitorio’s vineyards are surrounded by thick woods receiving moderate sun exposure. The relatively cool setting was an advantage in 2017. Well put together with a graceful flow, this Brunello echoes its setting and opens with pronounced cedar and evocative forest floor accents. Neither heavy nor over-concentrated, the palate is replete with pulpy red berries. There is a succulence to the fruit and a silkiness to the texture, and nuances of pulverised stone weave throughout. - Michaela Morris

Wine in Black

The Il Poggione 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark and savory character with more fruit weight and concentration than you might find in many of its peers. This wine shows a dense center of gravity that is padded with dark cherry, blackberry, toasted spice, mahogany smoked meat and tilled earth. Despite the robust aromas, this Sangiovese is actually quite streamlined and polished in texture. The tannins are soft and veering toward accessibility. This is an ambitious production of 200,000 bottles. The estate's Riserva Vigna Paganelli was not made in 2018, so fruit from that wine went here instead.

Vinous

Vinous by Antonio Galloni

Impressing from the first tilt of the glass, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino makes itself known, with a heady burst of exotic spice and crushed ashen stone giving way to dried black cherries and grilled herbs. This combines the energy of the vintage with the dark balsamic-tinged fruits of Montalcino’s southern reaches, as zesty acidity maintains balance throughout, and flinty minerals saturate toward the close. It finishes long, savory and structured, yet its tannins are more rounded than anticipated, creating both a classic feel, but also leaving a mouthwatering sensation that tricks the taster back to the glass for more. Easily one of the top wines of the vintage, the 2018 is not to be missed.

Brunello ist schon eine Sangiovese-Klasse für sich und dieses Exemplar von Top-Gut La Colombina ist definitiv von Wein-Adel: intensiv, saftig, elegant – wie man sich einen Brunello wünscht!

James Suckling

Savory plums, roasted sesame, oranges and hints of tar and meaty spices on the nose, leading to a svelte, medium-bodied palate with structured, frosted tannins that add grip to the long, savory finish. Drink or hold.

Vinous

Vinous by Antonio Galloni

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is intense, evolving in the glass, as smoky crushed stone gives way to balsamic spices, dried black cherries and hints of mint. It boasts creamy textural red and black fruits with a cocoa tinge. Balance is expertly maintained by brisk acids and underpinnings of sour citrus. The 2017 finishes savory and structured, yet its tannins are rounded, making for a cassically dry finale with nuances of salted licorice that linger long. La Colombina found a wonderful balance from such a difficult year. Bravo!

Robert Parker

Robert Parker

With the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone mentioned on the front label, the La Colombina 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows a flavor profile that ties into the added intensity and dark fruit associated with this warmer side of the appellation. The wine shows power and textural richness; however, it never feels too ripe or heavy. Instead, it offers a rather subdued interpretation of the vintage without pushing the boundaries in any particular direction. The tannins are dry and stemmy at this young stage. Production is 16,000 bottles.
