Dem Auftakt mit rubinroter Farbe folgt ein kleines „Wellnessprogramm“ für den Geruchssinn: Noten von reifen Beeren, Kirschen und Pflaumen sowie würzige Kräuternoten, florale Nuancen und eine perfekt intergrierte Fassnote kann man hier wahrnehmen. Am Gaumen zeigt sich der feine Rote finessenreich und zugleich kraftvoll, wieder mit viel Frucht, dazu samtige Tannine und feine Mineralität, der Nachhall ist lang und aromatisch. Schlichtweg unwiderstehlich!

A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage.

Ata Rangi's 2019 Pinot Noir is the whole package. It has a piercing, focused nose, offering clarity of fruit and the backing support of lightly spiced French oak. Reminiscent of fresh yet sweet cherry fruit and woody herbs on the palate, it also reveals a savory tobacco and game note that's oh-so-Martinborough. The wine sits comfortably in your mouth, like a ball being gently cupped. It delivers excellent concentration, and the fine, powdery tannins coat the palate, leaving you licking the inside of your mouth and experiencing the texture of river stones. The finish is long, fresh and fragrant.

Really aromatic cranberry and redcurrant fruit with that gorgeous edge of white pepper. With air, the fruit almost gets a candied, heightened quality. On the palate, the fruit performs a veritable tight walk, between candied ripeness and utter freshness.

Vinifikation
Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2019 ist aus 100 % Pinot Noir vinifiziert. Die Handlese fand im März und April statt, das Lesegut stammt zum Teil vom legendären Abel-Clone ab, der in den 1970er Jahren heimlich aus dem Burgund nach Neuseeland importiert wurde. Vor der Fermentierung wurden 70 % der Trauben entrappt. Die Fermentierung durchlief dann verschiedene Abschnitte. Zuerst erfolgte eine fünf- bis sechstägige kühle Fermentierung mit wilder Hefe, danach verlief die normale Gärung 20 bis 26 Tage bei 32 °C, wobei der Most regelmäßig per Hand umgepumpt wurde. Nach dem Abzug startete die malolaktische Gärung in Eichenholz, danach folgte ein Ausbau in französischer Eiche (35 % neu) für elf Monate.
