Der 2023er DuMOL ‚Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay‘ repräsentiert einen kalifornischen Spitzen-Chardonnay, der es mit allen Crus dieser Welt aufnehmen kann. Der Wein aus Carneros’ berühmtem Hyde Vineyard besitzt Fülle und Opulenz, gleichzeitig Eleganz und Finesse. Es ist ein köstlicher Wein, der zu Beginn nach Feuerstein, Pollen, Verbene und Zitronengras, Limetten- und Orangenabrieb, etwas Crème brûlée und bester französischer Eiche duftet. Am Gaumen ist er lebendig und saftig. Was ihn zu einem großen Wein macht, ist die Tatsache, dass er trotz der Fülle elektrisierend mineralisch wirkt, mit einer grandiosen Tiefe, Steinigkeit und gleichzeitigem Schmelz sowie einer fantastischen Länge.

Dies ist eine herausragende Reihe von 2023er-Weinen, die im Weingut erstmals unter der Leitung von Jenna Davis entstanden sind, die zehn Jahre lang an der Seite von Andy Smith gearbeitet hat. Sie führt jetzt die Regie, hat einen großen Jahrgang erzeugt und mehrfach 100 Punkte erhalten. Chapeau!

The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is a great Hyde. A real Hyde. Rich, opulent and expressive, the 2023 stains the palate with superb concentration and texture. The oiliness, weight and overall palate presence are mind-blowing. Tangerine peel, white flowers, burnt sugar and a kiss of French oak are all beautifully amplified. The best Hyde Chardonnays are the California equivalent of Montrachet. This is a superb example.

Grapes for the 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard were harvested on September 30. It has dynamic aromas: the candle smoke and matchstick characteristic of this site slowly unfurl to reveal lemon peel, peach, panna cotta and vanilla. The medium-bodied palate has a luxurious silkiness and tremendously concentrated flavors. It’s balanced by tense, shimmery acidity and has an epically long finish. Its seamless structural balance and site expression point to a long and compelling life in the cellar. 750 cases were made.

A medium golden yellow color, the 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard Carneros is profound and expressive of Grand Cru-like depth and elegance all the way around. In the glass, it opens with notes of smoky wet stones, flint, preserved citrus, fresh flowers, and ripe peaches. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with a satin-like texture, and it’s intense, prolonged, and exceptionally balanced, with a long-lasting finish. Simply stunning, it’s one of the best wines I’ve ever tasted from DuMOL and is as good as it gets at this tasting. It should have no problem holding up over the next two decades if stored in cool cellars.

Hellem Fleisch und Kalb. Ebenso werden feine Gemüsegerichte wie etwa Gratin und Frikassee oder Risotto diesen Begleiter lieben.
Vinifikation
Der Chardonnay stammt aus der berühmten Parzelle Hyde Vineyard im kühlen südlichen Teil von Los Carneros im Napa Valley. Es ist ein Standort mit Morgennebel, kühlen Brisen und einer Bodenstruktur, die Struktur und Frische begünstigt. Die alten Reben liefern kleine, dickschalige Beeren mit großer Intensität. Die ganzen Trauben wurden in Fässer gepresst und dort vergoren und ausgebaut. Der Neuholzanteil liegt bei etwa 30 %.
