Schon das leuchtende Purpur des 2018er Ventoux ‚Ascensio‘ ist eine Wonne. Noch mehr aber das tiefe, intensive Bukett nach Pflaumen, dunklen Himbeeren und kandierten Erdbeeren, das sich mit schwarzer Oliventapenade, Pfeffer, Strohblumen und Lakritze mischt. Am Gaumen pulsiert der Wein vor Energie, tiefgründiger, reifer Frucht und Würze, zerstoßenem Stein, feinen Tanninen und einer überragenden Länge. Ein spektakulärer Ventoux.

Pure, pulsating black-plum and preserved-strawberry flavors take center stage in this Grenache (augmented by 5% Syrah). Matured entirely in cement tanks, it's unabashedly forward but has a thrilling veil of salt, cut stone and earth that lends lift and finesse throughout. Produced only in outstanding vintages, this bottling spectacularly expresses the power, concentration and freshness of Ventoux.

The only 2018 I was able to taste (I reviewed most of these last year), the 2018 Ventoux Ascensio checks in as 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah that saw a kick of stems and aging all in concrete tank. One of the deeper colored wines in the lineup, this deep purple/ruby-hued beauty boasts a captivating bouquet of smoked black fruits, black olive tapenade, ground pepper, spring flowers, and black licorice. Hitting the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, it’s one serious 2018 that would stand up to just about anything out there in a blind lineup. With building tannins, a great mid-palate, and a layered, lengthy finish, it has plenty of upfront charm.

Just bottled after maturing in concrete (10% went into new oak), the 2018 Ventoux Ascensio is a blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah, grown on richer, clay-limestone soils. It's seriously dark in color for a Grenache, especially one that was made with 30% whole clusters. A big, enveloping wine, it's hugely powerful, intense and tannic, with the stuffing to easily go a decade in the cellar and waves of deep purple fruit.

Vinifikation
Der Ventoux ‚Ascensio‘ 2018 ist eine Cuvée aus 95% Grenache und 5% Syrah. Die alten Rebstöcke der biodynamisch bewirtschafteten Einzellage, die von Lehm, Kalk und Geröll geprägt ist, liefern nur 20 hl/ha. Die Lese erfolgte im Oktober bei Vollreife und wurde nur teilweise entrappt: 30% der ganzen Trauben wurden in der langen Maischestandzeit von einem Monat vergoren. Der Ausbau erfolgte im klassischen Zementcuve.
