Crous St Martin gehört vielleicht nicht zu den bekanntesten Betrieben im Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sorgt aber beständig für gute Weine zu einem beeindruckend guten Preis-Genuss-Verhältnis. Das zeigt sich mal wieder bei diesem 'Hommage à l’an 1879 Châteauneuf-du-Pape', der wirklich sehr viel bietet!

This full-bodied Chateauneuf is very silky and manages to come off lighter than it really is. Lots of spice and wild thyme complexity. Long, structured finish that’s emphatically dry, but not a jot too muscular.

Blending 80% Grenache with the remainder equally divided between Syrah and Mourvèdre, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Crous Saint Martin Hommage à l'An 1879 aged for 15 months in a combination of stainless steel tanks (80%) and old oak barriques (20%). Swirling the glass unlocks prominent licorice, blackberry, black cherry and black tea aromas. Full-bodied and polished, the 2022 is sufficiently concentrated yet smoothly balanced and refreshing at the same time. It will provide ample pleasure right out of the gate.

I loved the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Crous Saint Martin Hommage À L'An 1879, a blend of 80% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre coming from a mix of sandy and pebbly soils. Mulled red and black fruit, roasted garrigue, licorice, and Provençal spice notes define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, round, beautifully textured, and concentrated.

The nose pops with the tang of bing cherry, cranberry, hibiscus, blood orange and new leather. Those notes all continue on the palate, before a warm, spicy finish where polished, smooth tannins anchor a river of acid.

Fresh style to this wine with bright, ripe black-cherry character. Lots of violets also on the nose, as well as a hint of camphor. The attack is quite austere with firm tannins, medium to full body and a refreshing finish. Needs time for better integration.

A pristine, fleshy Rioja Alavesa wine made with 100% tempranillo from a single vineyard in Laguardia. Lots of violets, mussels, blue fruit, herbs and dark cherries. Really juicy and firm, with vibrant fruit and a lengthy finish.

The 2021 Bakeder is 100% Tempranillo sourced from two estate vineyards: San Ginés and Castejones. In Euskera, the Basque language, "bakeder" translates to "beautiful peace," the name in this case serving as an homage to the town of Laguardia. Aged for ten months in used French oak barrels, this garnet-red wine with a purplish sheen offers primary aromas of fresh plums and elderberry, alongside hints of violets and herbs. Dry, moderately lean and chalky on the palate, it delivers a fine-textured, compact mouthfeel that culminates in a savory finish. This release signifies a departure from the classic Viña Real style, showcasing a lighter herbal profile and a less compact mouthfeel.

The 2021 Bakeder is a village red from Laguardia in search of a profound, long and fine wine with 13.75% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity. It fermented with a 17-day maceration followed by malolactic in concrete and 10 months in French oak barrels. It has a floral touch, with notes reminiscent of violets; the fruit is dark but with no excess ripeness (and less in 2021); and the tannins are soft and come from the fruit, not from the barrels. This is their interpretation of the character of Laguardia, with freshness, aided by the natural character of the year.
